As you may already know The Better Business Bureau promotes business ethics through voluntary self regulation, consumer and business education, and helps consumers with free pre-purchase information and consumer protection advice, including reliability reports on more than 101,000 local companies.

The BBB has recently announced an updated Code of Business Practices to better address current and emerging marketplace issues. They have developed a unique, summarized set of eight business "Standards for Trust." The Standards for Trust are easy to understand, and will help consumers find trustworthy businesses.

The Code of Business Practices and Standards for Trust form the foundation for BBB Accreditation and will apply to each of the more than 400,000 businesses accredited by the 125 BBBs serving communities across North America. The updated Code of Business Practices (and Standards for Trust) is effective as of January 1, 2009.

The new Standards of Trust are as follows:

01.  Build Trust - Establish and maintain a positive track record in the marketplace.

02.  Advertise Honestly - Adhere to established standards of advertising and selling.

03.  Tell The Truth - Honestly represent products and services, including clear and adequate disclosures of all material terms.

04.  Be Transparent - Openly identify the nature, location, and ownership of the business, and clearly disclose all policies, guarantees, and procedures that bear on a customer’s decision to buy.

05.  Honor Promises - Abide by all written agreements and verbal representation.

06.  Be Responsive - Address marketplace disputes quickly, professionally, and in good faith.

07.  Safeguard Privacy - Protect any data collected against mishandling and fraud, collect personal information only as needed, and respect the preferences of consumers regarding the use of their information.

08.  Embody Integrity - Approach all business dealings, marketplace transactions and commitments with integrity.
